Toolkit for Cooperative, Collective, & Collaborative Cultural Work

Toolkit for Cooperative, Collective, & Collaborative Cultural Work

Although not necessarily a workshop, this online toolkit provides resources that promote collaboration and solidarity.

My only gripe with the website is that it uses an accessibility plug-in. I've read that these tools attempt to make websites more accessible, but they can actually interfere with existing tools used by those with accessibilities. However, it can also be difficult for a small team to make a website that is totally accessible.

Alt Text as Poetry

Alt Text as Poetry

Alt text (alternative text) is used to describe images to those with impaired vision. For example, if a blind user comes across an image of a website, alt-text will describe the image to them. This alt-text is usually added manually by the website designer or content manager. It's incredibly important to write alt-text, especially because it's really easy to do. Almost all content management tools (e.g. for websites, social media platforms) allow you to add alt-text. Do not let Instagram make assumptions about what is in your image. Add alt-text manually!

Alt Text as Poetrywas created by Shannon and Bohana, both of whom are disabled artists and activists. This is a nice introduction to writing alt-text for those who are just starting to learn about it.

This is perhaps the only website that has content behind a paywall. However, it is totally worth the cost (and I believe some of his tutorials are free or at the very least, available on YouTube.

As of November 25, 2023, you can access all of his tutorials by subscribing to his Patreon for approximately $12/month (or less if you subscribe for the whole year).

ASCII Towns

ASCII Towns

This workshop was lead by Mindy Seu. The workshop page itself is pretty barebones, but I hope it inspires you to try the "ancient" art of ASCII art!

Defining Terms

Defining Terms

Shameless plug! I designed a website for a graduate seminar course at RISD where I explored the term "accessibility" from five points of entry. The website provides a definition for each entry point, as well as extra interactive components or links to other websites/articles.
